H-ATLAS: estimating redshifts of Herschel sources from sub-mm fluxes

چکیده
Upon its completion, the Herschel Astrophysics Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) will be the largest sub-millimetre survey to date, detecting close to half-a-million sources. It will only be possible to measure spectroscopic redshifts for a small fraction of these sources. However, if the rest-frame spectral energy distribution (SED) of a typical H-ATLAS source is known, this SED and the observed Herschel fluxes can be used to estimate the redshifts of the H-ATLAS sources without spectroscopic redshifts. In this paper, we use a sub-set of 40 H-ATLAS sources with previously measured redshifts in the range 0.5 < z < 4.2 to derive a suitable average template for high-redshift H-ATLAS sources. We find that a template with two dust components (Tc = 23.9 K, Th = 46.9 K and ratio of mass of cold dust to mass of warm dust of 30.1) provides a good fit to the rest-frame fluxes of the sources in our calibration sample. We use a jackknife technique to estimate the accuracy of the redshifts estimated with this template, finding a root mean square of z/(1 + z) = 0.26. For sources for which there is prior information that they lie at z > 1, we estimate that the rms of z/(1 + z) = 0.12. We have used this template to estimate the redshift distribution for the sources detected in the H-ATLAS equatorial fields, finding a bimodal distribution with a mean redshift of 1.2, 1.9 and 2.5 for 250, 350 and 500 μm selected sources, respectively.

Herschel – ATLAS : counterparts from the UV – NIR in the science demonstration phase catalogue ⋆
We present a technique to identify optical counterparts of 250μm-selected sources from the Herschel-ATLAS survey. Of the 6621 250μm > 32mJy sources in our science demonstration catalogue we find that ∼ 60 percent have counterparts brighter than r = 22.4mag in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Applying a likelihood ratio technique we are able to identify 2423 of the counterparts with a reliability R...

Wide-area X-ray and far-infrared surveys are a fundamental tool to investigate the link between AGN growth and star formation, especially in the low-redshift universe (z 1). The Herschel Terahertz Large Area survey (H-ATLAS) has covered 550 deg2 in five far-infrared and sub-mm bands, 16 deg2 of which have been presented in the Science Demonstration Phase (SDP) catalogue. Here we introduce the X...
متن کاملHerschel-ATLAS: Blazars in the science demonstration phase field *
To investigate the poorly constrained sub-mm counts and spectral properties of blazars we searched for these in the Herschel-ATLAS (H-ATLAS) science demonstration phase (SDP) survey catalog. We cross-matched 500 μm sources brighter than 50 mJy with the FIRST radio catalogue. We found two blazars, both previously known. Our study is among the first blind blazar searches at sub-mm wavelengths, i....
متن کاملColour matters: the effects of lensing on the positional offsets between optical and submillimetre galaxies in Herschel ⋆-ATLAS
We report an unexpected variation in the positional offset distributions between Herschel -ATLAS sub-millimetre (submm) sources and their optical associations, depending on both 250-μm signal-to-noise ratio and 250/350-μm colour. We show that redder and brighter submm sources have optical associations with a broader distribution of positional offsets than would be expected if these offsets were...
متن کاملMining the Herschel⋆-ATLAS: submillimeter-selected blazars in equatorial fields
The Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) provides an unprecedented opportunity to search for blazars at sub-mm wavelengths. We crossmatched the FIRST radio source catalogue with the 11655 sources brighter than 35 mJy at 500μm in the ∼ 135 square degrees of the sky covered by the H-ATLAS equatorial fields at 9 h and 15 h, plus half of the field at 12 h. We found that 379 ...
